Counting washers before they slide under one another
Washers are thin, flat and slippery, so a handful tipped onto a tray overlaps like fish scales, and two overlapping washers can be read as one. Maintenance stores, kitting benches and goods-in teams count them because they are the part most often miscounted by hand: cheap, small and easy to lose track of in a bulk pack. Getting them into one clean layer matters more here than with almost any other fastener.
Spread washers with a flat ruler or a card until each one shows its full ring with the tray visible through the hole. A dark tray makes that hole read clearly against a bright washer. Oily washers cling together in pairs, so wipe them or tap the tray before you shoot. Split lock washers, flat washers and wide fender washers look different from above; mark one of each in Similar items, up to three, and compare the per-example split with what you laid out.
Very small washers are where the size settings matter. In Distinct objects mode, leave Ignore small detections at Off and slide Detection sensitivity toward Smaller items if markers are missing, then review each marker and correct the tally row. Hex nuts and rivets from the same kit can follow as further rows.

Frequently asked questions
- Do the items need to be separated before counting?
- Slight touching can work, but full overlaps hide items and make the result less reliable. Spread them one layer deep under even light, mark a clear example, and review every result marker.
- What if the photo has more than just washers in it?
- The counter automatically looks for washers in your photo. Similar-looking distractors can still affect the result, so review every marker before using the total.
- Can I count several photos into one total?
- Yes — count each photo and add every reviewed result to the tally sheet as a labelled row. Export the tally as CSV or a PDF report, or save it to your account.
- Is it free and private?
- Yes. You can count, review and download a free result without an account. Downloads are free without a watermark. No signup required. Server-processed photos are encrypted in transit and removed under our Security policy.
