Saving Kodak KDC photos as lossless PNG files

PNG suits KDC files better than it suits most camera RAW. Kodak's consumer cameras recorded small images, about 7 megapixels on the EasyShare P712 and far less on early DC models, so a lossless PNG stays a comfortable size while keeping every pixel of the developed photo. That makes it a good format for a family archive, or for pictures you plan to restore and retouch.

Converting cannot add detail the camera never captured, and these were small sensors. If a photo is going to be printed larger, increase its resolution with AI, working from the PNG so the upscaler isn't fed JPG compression blocks. For a cut-out of a person or object, remove the cluttered background from the PNG as well.

Every PNG here uses 8 bits per color channel and the white balance the camera recorded. Keep the original KDC with it. For emailing or posting the same pictures, KDC to JPG makes smaller files that open on any phone.
