Why convert PSD to JPG?

  • JPG is supported far more widely than PSD, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
  • JPG is made for photos you share, email, print or upload.
  • No Photoshop needed: the file is opened on our servers and you download a ready-to-use JPG.

What to expect when converting PSD to JPG

  • JPG can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
  • JPG uses lossy compression; raise the quality in Settings for a closer copy of the original.
  • Layers are merged: you get the image as it looks with all visible layers combined.

Getting a shareable JPG out of a layered Photoshop file

Most PSD to JPG requests start with a file someone else made: a flyer from a designer, a mockup from a stock site or a template from a print shop, landing on a computer without Photoshop. The converter reads the combined picture stored inside the PSD, which is every visible layer merged the way Photoshop displayed it at the last save. Effects and blend modes therefore come out as they looked in Photoshop, while hidden layers stay out of the result. Text layers turn into ordinary pixels, so hold on to the PSD if anyone needs to change the wording later.

JPG can't hold transparency. If the design sits on a see-through canvas, such as a logo or a cut-out product, those areas are filled with the Background fill color in Settings, which is white unless you change it; match it to the page or slide the JPG will sit on. The quality slider starts at 90. From 90 upward, color is stored at full resolution, which keeps thin red or blue type crisp, while lower settings shrink the file at the cost of softer colored edges.

The JPG keeps the full pixel size of the PSD, and print layouts are often several thousand pixels wide, more than many upload forms allow. Resize it to the width a site asks for or squeeze it under 500 KB. When the design needs to stay transparent, save it as a PNG instead.

Before and after converting a PSD to JPG

  • Check the file size first: uploads take up to 20 MB on the free plan and 50 MB with Premium, and layered PSDs grow quickly.
  • If the JPG is blank or doesn't match the PSD, open it in Photoshop, save it again with Maximize Compatibility turned on (that option stores the combined image) and upload the new copy.
  • A PSD set up in CMYK for print is converted to RGB, so compare logo and brand colors with the original.
  • Zoom to 100% on small text and thin lines before you send the file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PSD to JPG?
Upload your PSD file above. It is converted to JPG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting PSD to JPG lose quality?
JPG is lossy, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. Raise the quality in Settings for a closer copy.
Will the JPG keep the transparent background?
No. JPG can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
PSD or JPG: which should I use?
Use PSD for editing in Photoshop with layers, masks and effects intact. Use JPG for photos you share, email, print or upload. Keep in mind the main drawback of JPG: no transparency, and every re-save loses a little more detail.
What is a PSD file?
PSD keeps every Photoshop layer, mask and adjustment so a design stays editable. Outside Photoshop most apps can’t show it, so a flattened copy is needed for sharing.
Can I convert PSD to JPG without Photoshop?
Yes. The PSD file is opened on our servers, so you don’t need Photoshop or any other software installed. Upload the file, then download the finished JPG.
Is the PSD to JPG converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
