Why convert PSD to TIFF?

  • TIFF is supported far more widely than PSD, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
  • Transparent areas stay transparent: TIFF supports smooth, partial transparency just like PSD.
  • TIFF is made for print production, scanning and long-term archiving.
  • No Photoshop needed: the file is opened on our servers and you download a ready-to-use TIFF.

What to expect when converting PSD to TIFF

  • Layers are merged: you get the image as it looks with all visible layers combined.
  • Your original PSD file isn’t changed: you download a new TIFF copy.

In short: choose PSD for editing in Photoshop with layers, masks and effects intact; choose TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving.

Handing a Photoshop design to a printer as TIFF

Printers, publishers and document archives often ask for TIFF because it is lossless and accepted throughout print production. Converting gives them one flattened image: the merged visible layers, compressed with LZW, which loses nothing, and with transparent areas kept as real transparency instead of being filled with a color.

Check two things before you send it. First, color: the TIFF is saved in RGB even when the PSD was built in CMYK, so if the printer insists on CMYK, ask whether they convert RGB files themselves or need a CMYK file exported from Photoshop. Second, resolution: the TIFF has exactly the pixel count of the PSD, and the print size follows from it. At 300 pixels per inch, a 3,000-pixel-wide file prints about 10 inches wide; converting adds no detail.

TIFF files are large and browsers don't display them, so the page offers the result as a download card instead of a preview; open it in an image viewer to inspect it. If the printer wants no transparency at all, fill the background in Photoshop before converting. For a proof the client can open on any phone, make a one-page PDF, and for an emailed preview, a JPG is far smaller.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PSD to TIFF?
Upload your PSD file above. It is converted to TIFF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting PSD to TIFF lose quality?
No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is kept exactly.
Will the TIFF keep the transparent background?
Yes. TIFF supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
PSD or TIFF: which should I use?
Use PSD for editing in Photoshop with layers, masks and effects intact. Use TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving. Keep in mind the main drawback of TIFF: very large files that web browsers won’t display.
What is a PSD file?
PSD keeps every Photoshop layer, mask and adjustment so a design stays editable. Outside Photoshop most apps can’t show it, so a flattened copy is needed for sharing.
Can I convert PSD to TIFF without Photoshop?
Yes. The PSD file is opened on our servers, so you don’t need Photoshop or any other software installed. Upload the file, then download the finished TIFF.
Is the PSD to TIFF converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

For JPG, WebP, AVIF and image-to-PDF output: higher keeps more detail but makes a bigger file; 60–80 suits most photos. Documents (Publisher, XPS, EPS…) become PDFs with every page and sharp text, with no quality setting.

For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.

For JPG, BMP and image-to-PDF output, which can’t store transparency: the colour that fills transparent areas (white by default).
