Why convert PSD to BMP?

  • BMP is supported far more widely than PSD, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
  • BMP is made for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.
  • No Photoshop needed: the file is opened on our servers and you download a ready-to-use BMP.

What to expect when converting PSD to BMP

  • BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
  • Layers are merged: you get the image as it looks with all visible layers combined.

In short: choose PSD for editing in Photoshop with layers, masks and effects intact; choose BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.

Making a BMP from a PSD for older programs and devices

BMP requests usually come from software rather than people: an older Windows program, an embedded device, or a tool that reads raw pixels and nothing else. Those tools generally expect a plain 24-bit bitmap with no compression, which is exactly what the converter writes after merging the visible layers of the PSD.

Transparency has no place in that kind of BMP. Any see-through part of the PSD is filled with the Background fill color from Settings, white by default; set it to the color of the screen or panel where the bitmap will appear, so a logo does not arrive inside a white box. Because nothing is compressed, size follows a simple rule of about three bytes per pixel: a 1920 × 1080 image is roughly 6 MB, and a 6000 × 4000 print layout about 72 MB.

Many of these programs also expect an exact pixel size. The converter keeps the PSD dimensions, so take a detour: convert to PNG first, resize that PNG to the exact pixels required with PNG chosen as the output format, then turn the resized PNG into a BMP. Open the result in the target program before copying it to a device.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PSD to BMP?
Upload your PSD file above. It is converted to BMP automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting PSD to BMP lose quality?
No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is kept exactly.
Will the BMP keep the transparent background?
No. BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
PSD or BMP: which should I use?
Use PSD for editing in Photoshop with layers, masks and effects intact. Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Keep in mind the main drawback of BMP: very large files and no transparency.
What is a PSD file?
PSD keeps every Photoshop layer, mask and adjustment so a design stays editable. Outside Photoshop most apps can’t show it, so a flattened copy is needed for sharing.
Can I convert PSD to BMP without Photoshop?
Yes. The PSD file is opened on our servers, so you don’t need Photoshop or any other software installed. Upload the file, then download the finished BMP.
Is the PSD to BMP converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
