Why convert PSD to ICO?
- ICO is supported far more widely than PSD, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
- Transparent areas stay transparent: ICO supports smooth, partial transparency just like PSD.
- One ICO bundles the standard 16 to 256 px icon sizes (up to the size of your image), ready for a favicon.ico or a Windows shortcut.
- No Photoshop needed: the file is opened on our servers and you download a ready-to-use ICO.
What to expect when converting PSD to ICO
- Icons are square, so a non-square image is centred on a transparent square. Sizes larger than your image aren’t created, so start from at least 256 × 256 pixels.
- Layers are merged: you get the image as it looks with all visible layers combined.
PSD vs ICO
| Feature | PSD | ICO |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Photoshop Document | Windows Icon |
| Origin | Adobe Photoshop’s native format since 1990 | Created by Microsoft for Windows icons |
| Compression | Lossless, with layers | Lossless images at several sizes |
| Transparency | Yes — smooth, partial transparency | Yes — smooth, partial transparency |
| Animation | No | No |
| Colour | Up to 32 bits per channel, RGB or CMYK | Full colour with transparency |
| Where it opens | Photoshop and a few other editors; not browsers or phones | Browsers (as favicon.ico), Windows and icon editors |
| Best for | editing in Photoshop with layers, masks and effects intact | website favicons and Windows app or shortcut icons |
| Main drawback | large files that most apps can’t open | icons are square and at most 256 × 256 pixels |
In short: choose PSD for editing in Photoshop with layers, masks and effects intact; choose ICO for website favicons and Windows app or shortcut icons.
Turning a Photoshop logo into an ICO icon
An ICO is needed when a logo drawn in Photoshop has to become a favicon.ico for a website or the icon of a Windows shortcut or program. The converter merges the visible layers and scales the result into one .ico holding 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256-pixel versions. Transparent areas carry over, so a mark on an empty canvas becomes an icon with no box behind it.
Design for the square. A wide wordmark is shrunk to fit and centered with empty space above and below, which leaves the letters tiny at 16 pixels. Most favicons work better as a symbol or a single initial: crop the PSD canvas to a square around the mark before converting, and keep it at least 256 × 256 pixels so the largest size is included. Sizes bigger than the canvas are skipped, so a PSD only 100 pixels wide yields just the 16, 32, 48 and 64-pixel versions.
Fine detail disappears at small sizes, so check the 16-pixel icon in a browser tab: thin strokes and small text often blur into a smudge. For a complete website set, including the larger PNG icons phones use and a web manifest, export a PNG of the logo and build a favicon pack from it.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert PSD to ICO?
- Upload your PSD file above. It is converted to ICO automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting PSD to ICO lose quality?
- Each icon size is scaled down from your image and stored without further compression, so small sizes stay crisp.
- Will the ICO keep the transparent background?
- Yes. ICO supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
- PSD or ICO: which should I use?
- Use PSD for editing in Photoshop with layers, masks and effects intact. Use ICO for website favicons and Windows app or shortcut icons. Keep in mind the main drawback of ICO: icons are square and at most 256 × 256 pixels.
- What is a PSD file?
- PSD keeps every Photoshop layer, mask and adjustment so a design stays editable. Outside Photoshop most apps can’t show it, so a flattened copy is needed for sharing.
- What sizes does the ICO file include?
- The standard icon sizes of 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, skipping any larger than your image. Browsers and Windows pick the best size automatically.
- Is the PSD to ICO converter free?
- Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
