Why convert PSD to AVIF?

  • AVIF is supported far more widely than PSD, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
  • Transparent areas stay transparent: AVIF supports smooth, partial transparency just like PSD.
  • AVIF is made for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps.
  • No Photoshop needed: the file is opened on our servers and you download a ready-to-use AVIF.

What to expect when converting PSD to AVIF

  • AVIF uses lossy compression by default; raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.
  • Layers are merged: you get the image as it looks with all visible layers combined.

In short: choose PSD for editing in Photoshop with layers, masks and effects intact; choose AVIF for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps.

Using AVIF for the lightest web copy of a PSD

AVIF is the pick when page weight matters most: a large hero image, a photography portfolio or a landing page where every kilobyte counts. It usually beats both JPG and WebP on file size at the same visual quality, and like WebP it keeps transparency, so a layered PSD with a cut-out subject can go straight onto a colored section of a page.

The converter merges the visible layers and encodes the AVIF at quality 90 unless you move the slider. Gradients, skies and soft shadows are where low settings show first, as smooth color breaking into steps or blotches, so inspect those areas at full size before lowering it further. Lossless mode exists for graphics that must match the PSD pixel for pixel, though the file then grows considerably.

Support is the catch. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or later show AVIF, but many editing apps and older devices cannot open it, and some upload forms refuse it. On a website, offer a fallback next to it, such as a WebP version of the same PSD or a JPG. AVIF also takes longer to create than the other formats, so a big PSD may need a little patience.

Before publishing the AVIF

  • View gradients and dark areas at 100% and look for banding.
  • Compare the pixel width with the space the image fills on the page.
  • Keep a JPG or WebP fallback for browsers and apps without AVIF support.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PSD to AVIF?
Upload your PSD file above. It is converted to AVIF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting PSD to AVIF lose quality?
AVIF is lossy by default, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. Raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.
Will the AVIF keep the transparent background?
Yes. AVIF supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
PSD or AVIF: which should I use?
Use PSD for editing in Photoshop with layers, masks and effects intact. Use AVIF for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps. Keep in mind the main drawback of AVIF: it is slow to create and many editing apps and older devices can’t open it.
What is a PSD file?
PSD keeps every Photoshop layer, mask and adjustment so a design stays editable. Outside Photoshop most apps can’t show it, so a flattened copy is needed for sharing.
Can I convert PSD to AVIF without Photoshop?
Yes. The PSD file is opened on our servers, so you don’t need Photoshop or any other software installed. Upload the file, then download the finished AVIF.
Is the PSD to AVIF converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

For JPG, WebP, AVIF and image-to-PDF output: higher keeps more detail but makes a bigger file; 60–80 suits most photos. Documents (Publisher, XPS, EPS…) become PDFs with every page and sharp text, with no quality setting.

For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.

For JPG, BMP and image-to-PDF output, which can’t store transparency: the colour that fills transparent areas (white by default).
