Why convert PSD to PNG?

  • PNG is supported far more widely than PSD, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
  • Transparent areas stay transparent: PNG supports smooth, partial transparency just like PSD.
  • PNG is made for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.
  • No Photoshop needed: the file is opened on our servers and you download a ready-to-use PNG.

What to expect when converting PSD to PNG

  • Layers are merged: you get the image as it looks with all visible layers combined.
  • Your original PSD file isn’t changed: you download a new PNG copy.

In short: choose PSD for editing in Photoshop with layers, masks and effects intact; choose PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.

Keeping transparent areas when a PSD becomes a PNG

PNG is the right target when the Photoshop design has to sit on top of something else: a logo placed over a video frame, a product cut-out for a slide, a sticker, or an interface element handed to a developer. Empty pixels in the PSD stay empty in the PNG, soft shadows and feathered edges included, because PNG stores partial transparency rather than a simple on/off mask. You get the merged image of all visible layers, saved without compression loss, so it can be reopened and re-saved elsewhere without getting worse.

The result preview opens on a checkerboard grid, which shows exactly which areas are empty; switch it to Website to judge the image against a plain page. A white rectangle where you expected the checkerboard usually means a filled background layer was switched on in the PSD. Hide that layer in Photoshop, save, and convert again.

The trade-off is weight. A PNG of a photo-heavy layout is usually much larger than the same picture as a JPG, which slows web pages and fills inboxes. For a website, a WebP copy keeps the transparency in a smaller file; for an opaque design, a JPG is lighter. If the PNG must meet a size limit, compress it toward a target size.

Checking the PNG before you use it

  • Look along the edges of cut-out shapes on the grid preview for a leftover halo from an old background.
  • Confirm the pixel dimensions suit the destination; the PNG keeps the full size of the PSD canvas.
  • Keep the PSD for future edits, since text and layers are merged into one image.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PSD to PNG?
Upload your PSD file above. It is converted to PNG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting PSD to PNG lose quality?
No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is kept exactly.
Will the PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. PNG supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
PSD or PNG: which should I use?
Use PSD for editing in Photoshop with layers, masks and effects intact. Use PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs. Keep in mind the main drawback of PNG: large files for photographs.
What is a PSD file?
PSD keeps every Photoshop layer, mask and adjustment so a design stays editable. Outside Photoshop most apps can’t show it, so a flattened copy is needed for sharing.
Can I convert PSD to PNG without Photoshop?
Yes. The PSD file is opened on our servers, so you don’t need Photoshop or any other software installed. Upload the file, then download the finished PNG.
Is the PSD to PNG converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

For JPG, WebP, AVIF and image-to-PDF output: higher keeps more detail but makes a bigger file; 60–80 suits most photos. Documents (Publisher, XPS, EPS…) become PDFs with every page and sharp text, with no quality setting.

For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.

For JPG, BMP and image-to-PDF output, which can’t store transparency: the colour that fills transparent areas (white by default).
