Why convert AVIF to GIF?
- GIF is supported far more widely than AVIF, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
- GIF is made for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics.
What to expect when converting AVIF to GIF
- GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, so soft edges and shadows become hard-edged.
- GIF shows at most 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients are dithered and may show banding.

In short: choose AVIF for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps; choose GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics.
AVIF to GIF: when a GIF is the only accepted format
This trades one of the most capable image formats for one of the most limited, so do it only when a destination accepts GIF and nothing else, such as an old forum, a legacy newsletter tool or a platform whose uploader predates AVIF. AVIF can carry high bit depth and wide color; the GIF gets a palette of 256 colors chosen to suit the picture.
Photographic AVIF images turn grainy because the missing colors are approximated with dithering, and gradients like skies can band. Transparency survives only as on or off, so soft cut-out edges become hard. The GIF will also be far larger than the AVIF, and shrinking the dimensions with the image resizer before converting keeps it manageable.
If the destination takes PNG or JPG, use AVIF to PNG for graphics with transparency or AVIF to JPG for photos; both look better than a GIF. To make an animated GIF from stills, arrange the frames in the GIF maker, which takes AVIF frames directly.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert AVIF to GIF?
- Upload your AVIF file above. It is converted to GIF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting AVIF to GIF lose quality?
- GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, so photos lose colour detail; graphics with few colours convert cleanly.
- Will the GIF keep the transparent background?
- Partly. GIF keeps transparency as on or off per pixel, so soft edges and shadows become hard-edged.
- AVIF or GIF: which should I use?
- Use AVIF for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps. Use GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics. Keep in mind the main drawback of GIF: only 256 colours and on/off transparency.
- What is a AVIF file?
- AVIF compresses still images with the AV1 video codec. It usually produces smaller files than JPG and WebP at the same visual quality and supports HDR and transparency.
- Is the AVIF to GIF converter free?
- Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
