Why convert AVIF to PDF?
- PDF is supported far more widely than AVIF, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
- The PDF page is sized to your image, so it prints and previews without cropping or extra borders.
What to expect when converting AVIF to PDF
- PDF can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
- You get one page per image, with the picture embedded as a high-quality JPEG. To combine several images into one PDF, use the Image to PDF tool.
AVIF vs PDF
| Feature | AVIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | AV1 Image File Format | Portable Document Format |
| Origin | Released by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019 | Created by Adobe in 1993; an ISO standard since 2008 |
| Compression | Lossy or lossless | Document page with the image embedded at high quality |
| Transparency | Yes — smooth, partial transparency | No — transparent areas get a solid background |
| Animation | Yes | No |
| Colour | 8, 10 or 12 bits per channel, including HDR | Full colour |
| Where it opens | Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+; fewer editing apps | Built-in viewers in browsers, phones and computers |
| Best for | the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps | emailing, printing and attaching images to forms and applications |
| Main drawback | it is slow to create and many editing apps and older devices can’t open it | the picture isn’t editable as an image until you convert it back |
In short: choose AVIF for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps; choose PDF for emailing, printing and attaching images to forms and applications.
Sharing an AVIF image as a one-page PDF
Sending an AVIF to someone with an older computer, or attaching it to an application form, can fail because their software or the form doesn't recognize .avif. A PDF sidesteps that: the built-in viewers on browsers, phones and computers open it, and forms that ask for a document accept it.
The PDF has one page sized exactly to the picture. Transparent areas get a solid Background fill color, white unless you pick another. The picture inside is stored as a JPEG at the slider's quality, so the PDF is usually larger than the AVIF; 80 to 90 is a sensible balance for photos, and 100 suits documents with small text.
If the recipient needs to edit the image, a PDF makes that harder, so send a PNG instead. For several AVIF images in one file, build a multi-page PDF with A4, Letter or image-sized pages.
