Why convert AVIF to BMP?

  • BMP is lossless, so the converted image loses no further detail when you edit and save it again.
  • BMP is made for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.

What to expect when converting AVIF to BMP

  • BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
  • Converting can’t bring back detail that AVIF compression already removed: the BMP is an exact copy of the image as it is, usually in a bigger file.

In short: choose AVIF for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps; choose BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.

AVIF to BMP for legacy and embedded software

Software written long before AVIF appeared, such as older Windows programs, display controllers and hobby electronics tools, cannot decode it. BMP's raw, uncompressed 24-bit pixels are the format that kind of software understands, which is why it remains the fallback for very old or very simple programs.

Transparency in the AVIF is flattened onto the Background fill color, which you set in the Settings tab; pick the color of the screen or page the image will sit on. The pixels are otherwise unchanged, and since BMP doesn't compress, the file grows to width × height × 3 bytes, many times the AVIF's size.

Small displays usually need an exact resolution, so resize to the display's pixel size first. If the old software reads JPG, AVIF to JPG gives a much smaller file; if it reads PNG, AVIF to PNG keeps the transparency instead of filling it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert AVIF to BMP?
Upload your AVIF file above. It is converted to BMP automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting AVIF to BMP lose quality?
No new loss is added: BMP stores the picture exactly as it is. Detail that AVIF compression removed earlier can’t be restored.
Will the BMP keep the transparent background?
No. BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
AVIF or BMP: which should I use?
Use AVIF for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps. Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Keep in mind the main drawback of BMP: very large files and no transparency.
What is a AVIF file?
AVIF compresses still images with the AV1 video codec. It usually produces smaller files than JPG and WebP at the same visual quality and supports HDR and transparency.
Is the AVIF to BMP converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
