Why convert BMP to TIFF?

  • TIFF files are usually smaller than BMP for the same picture, so pages load faster and uploads finish sooner.
  • TIFF is made for print production, scanning and long-term archiving.

What to expect when converting BMP to TIFF

  • Your original BMP file isn’t changed: you download a new TIFF copy.
  • The TIFF keeps the pixel dimensions of your BMP.

In short: choose BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels; choose TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving.

BMP to TIFF for print workflows and document archives

Nothing about picture quality changes here, since BMP and TIFF are both lossless; the point is acceptance, because print shops, publishing systems and records archives ask for TIFF, and few of them take BMP. The converter writes the same pixels into a TIFF with lossless LZW compression, which for graphics and documents is usually smaller than the uncompressed bitmap.

The pixel size doesn't change, so compare it with the print size before sending the file: at 300 pixels per inch, a 1024 × 768 BMP prints only about 3.4 × 2.6 inches. Transparency from a 32-bit BMP carries into the TIFF. The browser won't preview a TIFF, so expect a card with the file's name and size in place of a picture.

Archiving a whole folder? Premium batch converts many BMPs at once and hands back one ZIP. To share the same images on screen, a PNG copy opens everywhere, and a one-page PDF suits email.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert BMP to TIFF?
Upload your BMP file above. It is converted to TIFF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting BMP to TIFF lose quality?
No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is kept exactly.
BMP or TIFF: which should I use?
Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Use TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving. Keep in mind the main drawback of TIFF: very large files that web browsers won’t display.
What is a BMP file?
BMP stores pixels with no compression at all. Files are large, but very old or simple software that can’t read modern formats can usually read a BMP.
Is the BMP to TIFF converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

For JPG, WebP, AVIF and image-to-PDF output: higher keeps more detail but makes a bigger file; 60–80 suits most photos. Documents (Publisher, XPS, EPS…) become PDFs with every page and sharp text, with no quality setting.

For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.

For JPG, BMP and image-to-PDF output, which can’t store transparency: the colour that fills transparent areas (white by default).
