Why convert HEIC to TIFF?
- TIFF is supported far more widely than HEIC, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
- TIFF is lossless, so the converted image loses no further detail when you edit and save it again.
- TIFF is made for print production, scanning and long-term archiving.
What to expect when converting HEIC to TIFF
- Converting can’t bring back detail that HEIC compression already removed: the TIFF is an exact copy of the image as it is, usually in a bigger file.
- High-dynamic-range and wide-colour detail is converted to standard 8-bit colour.
HEIC vs TIFF
| Feature | HEIC | TIFF |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | High Efficiency Image Container | Tagged Image File Format |
| Origin | Apple’s default photo format since iOS 11 (2017) | Created by Aldus in 1986, now maintained by Adobe |
| Compression | Lossy (HEVC) | Lossless (LZW) or uncompressed |
| Transparency | Not in iPhone photos | Yes — smooth, partial transparency |
| Animation | No | No |
| Colour | 8 or 10 bits per channel, wide colour | Up to 16 bits per channel, RGB or CMYK |
| Where it opens | Apple devices; many Windows PCs, Android apps and websites need extra software | Photo editors, print and scanning software; most browsers don’t display it |
| Best for | saving storage space on iPhones and iPads | print production, scanning and long-term archiving |
| Main drawback | limited support outside Apple devices | very large files that web browsers won’t display |
In short: choose HEIC for saving storage space on iPhones and iPads; choose TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving.
Sending iPhone HEIC photos to print or publishing as TIFF
Photo labs, publishers and print-on-demand services commonly ask for TIFF, and Windows editing software without HEIC support opens it readily. Converting an iPhone HEIC to TIFF hands over the full-resolution photo with lossless storage, so retouching and re-saving later adds no further compression.
Color is converted to standard 8-bit along the way, and the file grows a great deal; a 12-megapixel photo can run to tens of megabytes as TIFF. The image keeps the phone's full pixel dimensions, and at 300 pixels per inch a 4032-pixel-wide iPhone photo covers about 13 inches.
TIFF can't be previewed in the browser, so the result shows as a file card with its size; open it in your editor to check. For a lab that accepts JPG, a high-quality JPG is far easier to upload, and for a proof or a contract print, a PDF of the photo opens anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert HEIC to TIFF?
- Upload your HEIC file above. It is converted to TIFF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting HEIC to TIFF lose quality?
- No new loss is added: TIFF stores the picture exactly as it is. Detail that HEIC compression removed earlier can’t be restored.
- HEIC or TIFF: which should I use?
- Use HEIC for saving storage space on iPhones and iPads. Use TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving. Keep in mind the main drawback of TIFF: very large files that web browsers won’t display.
- What is a HEIC file?
- HEIC is how iPhones and iPads save photos by default. It needs up to half the space of a JPG at similar quality, but many Windows PCs, Android apps and websites still can’t open it.
- Is the HEIC to TIFF converter free?
- Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
