In short: choose BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels; choose PDF for emailing, printing and attaching images to forms and applications.

BMP to PDF for scanned forms and old document images

Older scanner software and some office devices save pages as BMP, which few recipients expect as an attachment. A PDF of the image opens in any viewer and is accepted by forms and portals that ask for documents. The bitmap is placed on one page and stored as a JPEG, so the PDF usually comes out far smaller than the BMP.

Page size follows the bitmap's pixels, 72 of them to the inch: a 1700 × 2200 scan of a letter page at 200 dpi becomes a page of roughly 24 × 31 inches, so pick fit-to-page when you print. Keep the quality slider high when the page has small print or a signature on it.

Several scanned pages belong in one document, so combine them on standard paper sizes. If a portal wants text it can search, create a searchable PDF instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert BMP to PDF?
Upload your BMP file above. It is converted to PDF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting BMP to PDF lose quality?
The image is embedded in the PDF as a high-quality JPEG at its full pixel size.
BMP or PDF: which should I use?
Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Use PDF for emailing, printing and attaching images to forms and applications. Keep in mind the main drawback of PDF: the picture isn’t editable as an image until you convert it back.
What is a BMP file?
BMP stores pixels with no compression at all. Files are large, but very old or simple software that can’t read modern formats can usually read a BMP.
Can I put several BMP images into one PDF?
This converter makes one PDF page per image. To combine several images into one PDF, use the Image to PDF tool.
Is the BMP to PDF converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
