Why convert BMP to AVIF?

  • AVIF files are usually smaller than BMP for the same picture, so pages load faster and uploads finish sooner.
  • AVIF is made for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps.

What to expect when converting BMP to AVIF

  • AVIF uses lossy compression by default; raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.
  • Your original BMP file isn’t changed: you download a new AVIF copy.

In short: choose BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels; choose AVIF for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps.

BMP to AVIF: shrinking old bitmap collections

Old photo collections, scanned prints and exports from legacy software sometimes fill folders with BMP files that take enormous space. AVIF is the most compact format offered here, so display copies converted to it can save a great deal of storage.

Decide first what the copies are for. For a website gallery, lossy AVIF between 70 and 90 looks clean at a small size. To replace the originals, switch on Lossless mode so no pixel changes, accepting bigger files. Premium converts up to 60 BMPs in one batch and returns a ZIP; Pro raises that to 200.

Current browsers open AVIF, yet a number of photo viewers and editing apps still can't, so check with the people who will use the files. A WebP copy opens in more apps, and PNG stays the safest lossless choice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert BMP to AVIF?
Upload your BMP file above. It is converted to AVIF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting BMP to AVIF lose quality?
AVIF is lossy by default, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. Raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.
BMP or AVIF: which should I use?
Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Use AVIF for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps. Keep in mind the main drawback of AVIF: it is slow to create and many editing apps and older devices can’t open it.
What is a BMP file?
BMP stores pixels with no compression at all. Files are large, but very old or simple software that can’t read modern formats can usually read a BMP.
Is the BMP to AVIF converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
