Why convert BMP to WebP?

  • WebP is made for websites, online stores and blogs that need fast-loading images.

What to expect when converting BMP to WebP

  • WebP uses lossy compression by default; raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.
  • Your original BMP file isn’t changed: you download a new WebP copy.

BMP to WebP for web pages and online stores

A BMP is far too heavy for a web page. Uncompressed, a 1200 × 800 product photo comes to almost 3 MB before the page has loaded anything else. WebP brings it down to a size browsers fetch quickly, and every current browser displays it.

Choose the mode by content. Photographs do well as lossy WebP at the default 90 or a little lower. Screenshots, charts and interface captures from old software belong in Lossless mode, which leaves every pixel untouched yet still compresses far better than BMP. A 32-bit BMP with transparency keeps it in the WebP.

Some older desktop apps and upload forms reject WebP; for those, make a JPG copy of the bitmap. If the image is wider than your content area, scale it to the column width too, picking WebP as the output there.

Before the WebP goes live

  • Lossless mode on for screenshots and text, off for photos.
  • Pixel width close to the space the image fills on the page.
  • KB figure on the preview small enough for the page you are building.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert BMP to WebP?
Upload your BMP file above. It is converted to WebP automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting BMP to WebP lose quality?
WebP is lossy by default, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. Raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.
BMP or WebP: which should I use?
Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Use WebP for websites, online stores and blogs that need fast-loading images. Keep in mind the main drawback of WebP: older apps and some upload forms don’t accept it.
What is a BMP file?
BMP stores pixels with no compression at all. Files are large, but very old or simple software that can’t read modern formats can usually read a BMP.
Is the BMP to WebP converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
