Why convert JPG to TIFF?
- TIFF is lossless, so the converted image loses no further detail when you edit and save it again.
- TIFF is made for print production, scanning and long-term archiving.
What to expect when converting JPG to TIFF
- Converting can’t bring back detail that JPG compression already removed: the TIFF is an exact copy of the image as it is, usually in a bigger file.
- Your original JPG file isn’t changed: you download a new TIFF copy.
JPG vs TIFF
| Feature | JPG | TIFF |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) | Tagged Image File Format |
| Origin | Standardised in 1992 | Created by Aldus in 1986, now maintained by Adobe |
| Compression | Lossy, adjustable quality | Lossless (LZW) or uncompressed |
| Transparency | No | Yes — smooth, partial transparency |
| Animation | No | No |
| Colour | 16.7 million colours (8 bits per channel) | Up to 16 bits per channel, RGB or CMYK |
| Where it opens | All browsers, phones, computers and photo apps | Photo editors, print and scanning software; most browsers don’t display it |
| Best for | photos you share, email, print or upload | print production, scanning and long-term archiving |
| Main drawback | no transparency, and every re-save loses a little more detail | very large files that web browsers won’t display |
In short: choose JPG for photos you share, email, print or upload; choose TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving.
Delivering a JPG as TIFF to a print shop, publisher or archive
TIFF requests usually come from someone downstream: a printer's upload portal, a magazine's art desk, an archive that files everything as TIFF. Converting meets that format rule without altering the picture. The TIFF holds the decoded JPG pixel for pixel with lossless compression, so nothing further is lost, though nothing the JPG discarded comes back either. If a better original exists, such as the camera file, convert that instead.
Two things decide whether the print turns out well. Resolution comes first: the TIFF keeps the exact pixel dimensions of the JPG, and at the 300 pixels per inch many printers ask for, a 3000-pixel-wide photo covers 10 inches. Color comes second: the file is saved in RGB. If the printer specifies CMYK, ask whether their prepress team converts it or expects you to.
TIFF files are large and most browsers can't display them, so the page shows the file name and size instead of a preview; open the download in a photo viewer to check it. If the printer prefers a document for proofs, place the photo on an A4 or Letter PDF page instead.
Before sending the TIFF
- Divide the pixel width by 300 to see the largest sharp print in inches.
- Ask whether RGB is accepted or CMYK is required.
- Open the TIFF on your computer, since the browser cannot preview it.
- Keep the JPG as well; it is the lighter file for email and the web.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert JPG to TIFF?
- Upload your JPG file above. It is converted to TIFF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting JPG to TIFF lose quality?
- No new loss is added: TIFF stores the picture exactly as it is. Detail that JPG compression removed earlier can’t be restored.
- JPG or TIFF: which should I use?
- Use JPG for photos you share, email, print or upload. Use TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving. Keep in mind the main drawback of TIFF: very large files that web browsers won’t display.
- What is a JPG file?
- JPG is the standard format for photos. It shrinks files by discarding detail the eye barely notices, which suits photographs but blurs text and sharp edges.
- Is the JPG to TIFF converter free?
- Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
