Why convert HEIF to TIFF?

  • TIFF is supported far more widely than HEIF, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
  • TIFF is lossless, so the converted image loses no further detail when you edit and save it again.
  • TIFF is made for print production, scanning and long-term archiving.

What to expect when converting HEIF to TIFF

  • Converting can’t bring back detail that HEIF compression already removed: the TIFF is an exact copy of the image as it is, usually in a bigger file.
  • High-dynamic-range and wide-colour detail is converted to standard 8-bit colour.

HEIF to TIFF for printers, publishers and photo archives

Print shops, publishers and document archives regularly ask for TIFF, and hardly any of them accept HEIF. Converting hands them a file their print and layout software opens directly. The TIFF itself is saved with lossless LZW compression, so the copy you send loses nothing further and stays exact when it is saved again as TIFF.

Tell the printer what the file is: an 8-bit RGB copy of a compressed photo, not a 16-bit master and not CMYK, so the press side does its own color conversion. It is usually far larger than the HEIF. Browsers can't display TIFF, so the result appears as a file card listing its name and size; open the download in an image editor to check it.

Pixel count decides how big the print can be. At 300 pixels per inch, a 4000 × 3000 photo covers about 13.3 × 10 inches; anything larger may need more pixels from the AI upscaler. When the printer also wants a proof to approve, put the same photo on a PDF page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert HEIF to TIFF?
Upload your HEIF file above. It is converted to TIFF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting HEIF to TIFF lose quality?
No new loss is added: TIFF stores the picture exactly as it is. Detail that HEIF compression removed earlier can’t be restored.
HEIF or TIFF: which should I use?
Use HEIF for storing high-quality photos in less space on phones and cameras. Use TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving. Keep in mind the main drawback of TIFF: very large files that web browsers won’t display.
What is a HEIF file?
HEIF is the open standard behind HEIC. Samsung phones and several Canon, Sony and Fujifilm cameras can save HEIF photos, which are compact but not yet widely accepted.
Is the HEIF to TIFF converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
