Why convert TIFF to BMP?

  • BMP is made for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.
  • BMP needs no decoding, so very simple or older software can display it.

What to expect when converting TIFF to BMP

  • BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
  • Expect a bigger file: BMP usually takes more space than TIFF for the same picture.
  • Only the first page of a multi-page TIFF is converted, and CMYK print colour becomes standard RGB.

In short: choose TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving; choose BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.

TIFF to BMP for software that only opens plain bitmaps

Scanners and imaging tools often export TIFF, while some older Windows applications, embedded systems and tools that need raw pixels read BMP and nothing else. Both formats are lossless, so the conversion bridges the two without blurring anything; the BMP is written as standard 24-bit color.

Three things change. Only the first page of a multi-page TIFF is written. Transparent areas, which BMP can't store, get a solid color from the Background fill setting, white unless you choose another. And CMYK or 16-bit TIFFs become ordinary 8-bit RGB.

File size can jump, since a compressed TIFF may be a fraction of the BMP it becomes: a 5100 × 6600 letter scan at 600 dpi turns into a BMP of about 100 MB. If the software accepts PNG, convert the TIFF to PNG to stay lossless at a much smaller size.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert TIFF to BMP?
Upload your TIFF file above. It is converted to BMP automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting TIFF to BMP lose quality?
No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is kept exactly.
Will the BMP keep the transparent background?
No. BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
TIFF or BMP: which should I use?
Use TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving. Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Keep in mind the main drawback of BMP: very large files and no transparency.
What is a TIFF file?
TIFF is the workhorse of print and archiving. It keeps every pixel without loss and is accepted by print shops, publishers and document-management systems.
Is the TIFF to BMP converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
