Why convert HEIF to WebP?

  • WebP is made for websites, online stores and blogs that need fast-loading images.

What to expect when converting HEIF to WebP

  • WebP uses lossy compression by default; raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.
  • High-dynamic-range and wide-colour detail is converted to standard 8-bit colour.

Putting HEIF photos on a website as WebP

Most browsers won't display a HEIF photo, so a picture saved in that format can't simply be dropped into a web page. WebP is made for that job, since it loads in all modern browsers and packs photographs into small files. Converting is the step between the camera roll and a blog post, a store listing or a portfolio page.

For a hero image or a large gallery, leave the quality at 90; for thumbnails and long scrolling pages, try something nearer 70, convert again and see how far the KB badge on the preview drops. Lossless mode keeps every pixel of the converted image, but the file grows a lot, which only pays off for a screenshot or a graphic that was saved as HEIF. Either way the colors come out in standard 8-bit, the depth WebP works in.

Phone and camera photos are far larger in pixels than most page layouts show, so after converting, scale each WebP to the column it will fill, keeping WebP as the output format there. If a site builder refuses WebP, make a JPG from the same HEIF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert HEIF to WebP?
Upload your HEIF file above. It is converted to WebP automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting HEIF to WebP lose quality?
WebP is lossy by default, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. Raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.
HEIF or WebP: which should I use?
Use HEIF for storing high-quality photos in less space on phones and cameras. Use WebP for websites, online stores and blogs that need fast-loading images. Keep in mind the main drawback of WebP: older apps and some upload forms don’t accept it.
What is a HEIF file?
HEIF is the open standard behind HEIC. Samsung phones and several Canon, Sony and Fujifilm cameras can save HEIF photos, which are compact but not yet widely accepted.
Is the HEIF to WebP converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
