Why convert WebP to BMP?
- BMP is lossless, so the converted image loses no further detail when you edit and save it again.
- BMP is made for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.
What to expect when converting WebP to BMP
- BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
- BMP can’t hold this animation, so an animated WebP is saved as its first frame.
- Converting can’t bring back detail that WebP compression already removed: the BMP is an exact copy of the image as it is, usually in a bigger file.
WebP vs BMP
| Feature | WebP | BMP |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | WebP | Windows Bitmap |
| Origin | Released by Google in 2010 | Created by Microsoft for Windows |
| Compression | Lossy or lossless | Uncompressed |
| Transparency | Yes — smooth, partial transparency | No (in the 24-bit BMPs most apps read) |
| Animation | Yes | No |
| Colour | 8 bits per channel | 16.7 million colours (24-bit) |
| Where it opens | All current browsers; some older desktop apps and upload forms reject it | Windows and macOS apps, older software and browsers |
| Best for | websites, online stores and blogs that need fast-loading images | older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels |
| Main drawback | older apps and some upload forms don’t accept it | very large files and no transparency |
In short: choose WebP for websites, online stores and blogs that need fast-loading images; choose BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.
Opening WebP pictures in software that only reads BMP
A WebP saved from a browser can be a dead end for older Windows software, a hardware utility that loads images onto a display, or a teaching program built long before WebP existed. BMP is the lowest common denominator: uncompressed 24-bit pixels that such programs read directly.
Two WebP features don't carry over. Transparency is replaced by the Background fill color from Settings, white unless you choose otherwise, so set it to match the screen or page the image will appear on. Animation is dropped and the first frame is saved. Everything else, including the pixel dimensions, stays as it was.
Expect a much larger file, because a compact WebP becomes raw pixels: a 1000 × 1000 picture needs about 3 MB as BMP. If the program has a size or resolution ceiling, resize the image before converting. And if it turns out to accept JPG as well, a JPG copy is a fraction of the size.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert WebP to BMP?
- Upload your WebP file above. It is converted to BMP automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting WebP to BMP lose quality?
- No new loss is added: BMP stores the picture exactly as it is. Detail that WebP compression removed earlier can’t be restored.
- Will the BMP keep the transparent background?
- No. BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
- Will the animation be kept?
- No. BMP can’t hold animation, so an animated WebP is saved as its first frame.
- WebP or BMP: which should I use?
- Use WebP for websites, online stores and blogs that need fast-loading images. Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Keep in mind the main drawback of BMP: very large files and no transparency.
- What is a WebP file?
- WebP was designed by Google for the web. Google measured lossy WebP files at 25–34% smaller than comparable JPGs, and WebP also handles transparency and animation.
- Is the WebP to BMP converter free?
- Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
