Keeping lossless PNG copies of old Canon CRW photos

Moving a family or personal archive off old CDs? A CRW from a 10D, a 300D or a PowerShot G-series camera is a fragile thing to keep, because fewer programs read it each year. A PNG copy solves that without giving anything up to compression: the image is developed at its full size, roughly 3 to 6 megapixels for these cameras, and stored losslessly, so it does not degrade when it is edited and saved again.

Small pictures make PNG practical. A 6-megapixel PNG is a manageable file, unlike PNGs from modern high-resolution sensors, so there is little reason to choose a lossy format for the archive copy. Keep the CRW alongside it anyway, since it holds the full sensor data and a future editor may get more out of it. Matching names come for free: a single conversion keeps the original file name and only changes the extension.

Digital photos from that era can look soft on large modern screens. AI upscaling can enlarge an old photo for a bigger print or a slideshow, and a print-style border finishes a keepsake. For emailing a copy to relatives, CRW to JPG gives a much smaller file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CRW to PNG?
Upload your CRW file above. It is converted to PNG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting CRW to PNG lose quality?
No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is kept exactly.
CRW or PNG: which should I use?
Use CRW for adjusting exposure and white balance with maximum latitude. Use PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs. Keep in mind the main drawback of PNG: large files for photographs.
What is a CRW file?
CRW is Canon’s original RAW format from early 2000s EOS and PowerShot cameras. It stores the unprocessed sensor data for maximum editing latitude, so most apps can’t show it as a normal picture.
Can I convert CRW to PNG without Photoshop or Lightroom?
Yes. The CRW file is opened on our servers, so you don’t need Photoshop or Lightroom or any other software installed. Upload the file, then download the finished PNG.
Is the CRW to PNG converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
