DCR to PNG: lossless masters from Kodak DCS files

Libraries, newspapers and photographers preserving an early-2000s digital collection often want one master file per frame that will still open decades from now. PNG fits DCR files from Kodak DCS cameras well: it is an open, lossless format, and at the 6 to 14 megapixels those cameras recorded, a PNG stays a reasonable size, unlike PNGs from current high-resolution bodies.

Two things the master will not contain. It holds 8 bits per color channel, not the full sensor data, so keep the DCR as well if there is any chance someone will want to develop a frame again. And it shows the picture with the camera's own white balance, including any cast from the original lighting; corrections belong in a separate edited copy, so the master stays a faithful record of what the file contained.

To give a series a consistent archival look, make black-and-white copies alongside the masters. To publish part of the collection online, the DCR to JPG page produces smaller files, and you can aim a finished JPG at about 1,000 KB for galleries with an upload limit.
