ERF to PNG for prints, edits and archives of R-D1 photos
Because the Epson R-D1's files are only about 6 megapixels, PNG is a practical choice for them in a way it is not for modern 40-megapixel RAW files: the lossless copy stays a reasonable size, and nothing in the picture is lost to compression when you retouch it, crop it or print from it.
Rangefinder framing is approximate, so many frames benefit from a careful crop, and some older M-mount lenses leave dark corners you may want to trim away. Working on a PNG means each crop and save keeps the remaining pixels intact. Crop the frame first, then add a thin border if the picture is going on a wall or into a zine.
This PNG is developed with the camera's recorded white balance and saved at 8 bits per color channel, which suits printing and sharing but holds less tonal range than the ERF. Keep the original for any future edit from the RAW. When you only need a copy to send to someone, ERF to JPG is lighter.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert ERF to PNG?
- Upload your ERF file above. It is converted to PNG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.

- ERF or PNG: which should I use?
- Use ERF for adjusting exposure and white balance with maximum latitude. Use PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs. Keep in mind the main drawback of PNG: large files for photographs.
