Why convert HEIC to GIF?

  • GIF is supported far more widely than HEIC, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
  • GIF is made for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics.

What to expect when converting HEIC to GIF

  • GIF shows at most 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients are dithered and may show banding.
  • High-dynamic-range and wide-colour detail is converted to standard 8-bit colour.

HEIC to GIF: getting an iPhone photo into a GIF-only spot

Turning an iPhone photo into a GIF makes sense only when a destination insists on GIF. The result is a still image limited to 256 colors, so expect dithering grain across skin, skies and shadows, and some color banding. Live Photo motion isn't included: the HEIC holds the still picture, so the GIF has a single frame.

A full-resolution phone photo makes an enormous GIF, because GIF compresses photographs poorly and offers no quality slider. Shrink it to a few hundred pixels wide first; that is the most effective way to keep the file reasonable.

For a moving GIF made from a burst or a series of iPhone shots, use the GIF maker. It takes JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF and BMP frames rather than HEIC, so turn the photos into JPGs before adding them. Once the animation is built, the GIF compressor can cut its weight for chat apps with upload caps.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert HEIC to GIF?
Upload your HEIC file above. It is converted to GIF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting HEIC to GIF lose quality?
GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, so photos lose colour detail; graphics with few colours convert cleanly.
HEIC or GIF: which should I use?
Use HEIC for saving storage space on iPhones and iPads. Use GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics. Keep in mind the main drawback of GIF: only 256 colours and on/off transparency.
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is how iPhones and iPads save photos by default. It needs up to half the space of a JPG at similar quality, but many Windows PCs, Android apps and websites still can’t open it.
Is the HEIC to GIF converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
