Why convert HEIC to BMP?

  • BMP is supported far more widely than HEIC, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
  • BMP is lossless, so the converted image loses no further detail when you edit and save it again.
  • BMP is made for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.

What to expect when converting HEIC to BMP

  • Converting can’t bring back detail that HEIC compression already removed: the BMP is an exact copy of the image as it is, usually in a bigger file.
  • High-dynamic-range and wide-colour detail is converted to standard 8-bit colour.

In short: choose HEIC for saving storage space on iPhones and iPads; choose BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.

HEIC to BMP for older software that cannot read iPhone photos

Older Windows programs, embedded display tools and some specialist applications can't decode HEIC, and many of them also predate compressed formats altogether. BMP removes the decoding problem entirely by storing raw pixels. The iPhone photo is decoded, converted to standard 8-bit color and written as a 24-bit bitmap.

The catch is size. BMP has no compression, so a 12-megapixel iPhone photo becomes a file of about 36 MB, and higher-resolution camera modes produce far more. Many legacy tools struggle with images that large, so resize the photo to the dimensions the program or screen expects before converting.

Check whether the program accepts JPG first; if it does, HEIC to JPG gives a file a fraction of the size. iPhone photos carry no transparency, so the Background fill setting has nothing to fill on this page and can be left alone.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert HEIC to BMP?
Upload your HEIC file above. It is converted to BMP automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting HEIC to BMP lose quality?
No new loss is added: BMP stores the picture exactly as it is. Detail that HEIC compression removed earlier can’t be restored.
HEIC or BMP: which should I use?
Use HEIC for saving storage space on iPhones and iPads. Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Keep in mind the main drawback of BMP: very large files and no transparency.
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is how iPhones and iPads save photos by default. It needs up to half the space of a JPG at similar quality, but many Windows PCs, Android apps and websites still can’t open it.
Is the HEIC to BMP converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.
