HEIC to AVIF: a compact photo format that browsers can show
HEIC and AVIF are close relatives: both use the same image container design, and both pack photos into small files. The difference is the compression inside. HEIC uses the HEVC video codec, which most browsers outside Safari don't display; AVIF uses AV1, which current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or later do. Converting keeps a compact file and gains the ability to show it on a web page.
The photo moves to standard 8-bit color and is compressed a second time, so start with quality around 70 to 80 and compare the preview at full size. AVIF encoding is slower than JPG or WebP, especially for a full-resolution phone photo, so reducing the dimensions first speeds things up and saves space.
AVIF is for publishing, not sharing. Friends, coworkers and many apps open a JPG more reliably, so convert to JPG for messages and email. If your website platform won't take AVIF, HEIC to WebP is the alternative.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert HEIC to AVIF?
- Upload your HEIC file above. It is converted to AVIF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting HEIC to AVIF lose quality?
- AVIF is lossy by default, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. Raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.
- HEIC or AVIF: which should I use?
