Why convert GIF to TIFF?

  • TIFF is lossless, so the converted image loses no further detail when you edit and save it again.
  • TIFF is made for print production, scanning and long-term archiving.

What to expect when converting GIF to TIFF

  • TIFF can’t hold this animation, so an animated GIF is saved as its first frame.
  • Converting can’t bring back detail that GIF compression already removed: the TIFF is an exact copy of the image as it is, usually in a bigger file.

GIF to TIFF for print layouts, document systems and archives

TIFF comes into play when a GIF graphic, such as an old web banner, a diagram or a logo kept as GIF, has to go into a print layout, a document management system or an archive that only takes TIFF. The first frame is written as a lossless TIFF, and its transparent areas stay transparent.

The picture itself stays as it was. The TIFF holds exactly the pixels of the GIF frame, still limited to its original 256 colors and its original pixel size, which for web graphics is often small. A 600-pixel-wide banner prints only 2 inches wide at 300 pixels per inch, so confirm the size works before you send it.

No browser preview exists for TIFF, so the page lists the result's name and size; open it in your layout or image software to check it. If the graphic is too small for print, an AI upscale of the GIF may give the printer more pixels to work with. For a proof the client can open anywhere, place the frame on a PDF page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert GIF to TIFF?
Upload your GIF file above. It is converted to TIFF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting GIF to TIFF lose quality?
No new loss is added: TIFF stores the picture exactly as it is. Detail that GIF compression removed earlier can’t be restored.
Will the TIFF keep the transparent background?
Yes. TIFF supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
Will the animation be kept?
No. TIFF can’t hold animation, so an animated GIF is saved as its first frame.
GIF or TIFF: which should I use?
Use GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics. Use TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving. Keep in mind the main drawback of TIFF: very large files that web browsers won’t display.
What is a GIF file?
GIF is the original web animation format. Each frame can use only 256 colours, so it suits simple graphics and short loops rather than photos.
Is the GIF to TIFF converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

For JPG, WebP, AVIF and image-to-PDF output: higher keeps more detail but makes a bigger file; 60–80 suits most photos. Documents (Publisher, XPS, EPS…) become PDFs with every page and sharp text, with no quality setting.

For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.

For JPG, BMP and image-to-PDF output, which can’t store transparency: the colour that fills transparent areas (white by default).
