Why convert HEIF to PDF?
- PDF is supported far more widely than HEIF, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
- The PDF page is sized to your image, so it prints and previews without cropping or extra borders.
What to expect when converting HEIF to PDF
- You get one page per image, with the picture embedded as a high-quality JPEG. To combine several images into one PDF, use the Image to PDF tool.
- High-dynamic-range and wide-colour detail is converted to standard 8-bit colour.
HEIF vs PDF
| Feature | HEIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | High Efficiency Image File Format | Portable Document Format |
| Origin | Developed by MPEG and finalised in 2015 (ISO/IEC 23008-12) | Created by Adobe in 1993; an ISO standard since 2008 |
| Compression | Lossy (usually HEVC) | Document page with the image embedded at high quality |
| Transparency | Rarely used in camera photos | No — transparent areas get a solid background |
| Animation | No | No |
| Colour | 8 or 10 bits per channel, wide colour | Full colour |
| Where it opens | Recent phones and cameras; many PCs, apps and websites need extra software | Built-in viewers in browsers, phones and computers |
| Best for | storing high-quality photos in less space on phones and cameras | emailing, printing and attaching images to forms and applications |
| Main drawback | many computers, apps and websites can’t open it | the picture isn’t editable as an image until you convert it back |
In short: choose HEIF for storing high-quality photos in less space on phones and cameras; choose PDF for emailing, printing and attaching images to forms and applications.
Turning a HEIF photo into a one-page PDF for a form or a printer
Application portals, insurers and offices often want a PDF even when the content is a single photo, such as a signed form you photographed or a receipt. Converting places the HEIF on one PDF page that opens in the built-in viewer of any phone or computer.
The page is sized from the picture itself, at one point (1/72 inch) per pixel. A 4000 × 3000 photo therefore makes a page of about 56 × 42 inches: it looks normal on screen, but choose fit-to-page scaling when you print. The photo sits inside the PDF as a JPEG governed by the quality slider, which begins at 90, so a lower setting gives a lighter file.
Several photos for the same application belong in one document: combine them on A4 or Letter pages with margins rather than sending a separate PDF per photo. If the portal sets a size limit, shrink the finished PDF. Photos that end in .heic go through the HEIC to PDF converter.
