HEIF to AVIF: swapping a storage format for one browsers display
HEIF and AVIF are close relatives that store a still picture in the same kind of container. The difference is the compression inside, usually HEVC for HEIF and AV1 for AVIF, and where each one opens: web browsers, Safari from version 16 included, display AVIF on a page, while they rarely show HEIF. Converting keeps the photo compact and makes it usable on a site.
Two settings shape the result. The quality slider, starting at 90, trades file size against detail; Lossless mode stores the converted pixels exactly at a much larger size. AVIF can carry 10- or 12-bit color, yet this conversion passes through standard 8-bit color, so HDR brightness from a camera HEIF does not survive. Look at skies and skin tones in the preview against the original before you publish.
Some editing apps and older phones still can't open AVIF. Keep a WebP copy of the photo as a fallback, and if a form demands a JPG under a set size, compress a JPG to the KB target it asks for.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert HEIF to AVIF?
