Why convert WebP to ICO?

  • Transparent areas stay transparent: ICO supports smooth, partial transparency just like WebP.
  • One ICO bundles the standard 16 to 256 px icon sizes (up to the size of your image), ready for a favicon.ico or a Windows shortcut.

What to expect when converting WebP to ICO

  • ICO can’t hold this animation, so an animated WebP is saved as its first frame.
  • Icons are square, so a non-square image is centred on a transparent square. Sizes larger than your image aren’t created, so start from at least 256 × 256 pixels.

Making a site or desktop icon from a WebP logo

Logos downloaded from websites now often come as WebP, and a WebP with a transparent background is a good icon source: the clear areas stay clear in the ICO. The converter scales the image into each standard icon size up to 256 pixels and stores them together in one .ico file that browsers and Windows read.

Watch the source size. Web logos are frequently small, and sizes larger than your image are skipped rather than blown up, so a 128-pixel WebP gives icons up to 128 and nothing at 256. Windows reaches for the largest size on high-resolution displays, so for a shortcut icon find a bigger version of the logo. If the logo isn't yours, make sure you may use it.

A wide logo is shrunk to fit the square and centered, which can leave it very small; crop it to a square around the symbol first. For website use beyond the tab icon, make a full favicon pack with the Apple touch icon and Android sizes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert WebP to ICO?
Upload your WebP file above. It is converted to ICO automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting WebP to ICO lose quality?
Each icon size is scaled down from your image and stored without further compression, so small sizes stay crisp.
Will the ICO keep the transparent background?
Yes. ICO supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
Will the animation be kept?
No. ICO can’t hold animation, so an animated WebP is saved as its first frame.
WebP or ICO: which should I use?
Use WebP for websites, online stores and blogs that need fast-loading images. Use ICO for website favicons and Windows app or shortcut icons. Keep in mind the main drawback of ICO: icons are square and at most 256 × 256 pixels.
What is a WebP file?
WebP was designed by Google for the web. Google measured lossy WebP files at 25–34% smaller than comparable JPGs, and WebP also handles transparency and animation.
What sizes does the ICO file include?
The standard icon sizes of 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, skipping any larger than your image. Browsers and Windows pick the best size automatically.
Is the WebP to ICO converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
