Why convert JPG to ICO?

  • One ICO bundles the standard 16 to 256 px icon sizes (up to the size of your image), ready for a favicon.ico or a Windows shortcut.
  • Browsers show the ICO as your site’s tab and bookmark icon when you save it as favicon.ico.

What to expect when converting JPG to ICO

  • Icons are square, so a non-square image is centred on a transparent square. Sizes larger than your image aren’t created, so start from at least 256 × 256 pixels.
  • Your original JPG file isn’t changed: you download a new ICO copy.

In short: choose JPG for photos you share, email, print or upload; choose ICO for website favicons and Windows app or shortcut icons.

Making a favicon or Windows icon from a JPG

A JPG logo or photo can become a .ico for a website tab or a Windows shortcut, but two traits of JPG shape the result. It has no transparency, so whatever surrounds the subject, often a white box, stays in every icon size. And icons are square: a non-square JPG is shrunk to fit and centered, with transparent strips filling the rest.

The file bundles 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixel versions, but only the sizes your image can fill; a 100-pixel JPG yields 16, 32, 48 and 64. Start from at least 256 pixels on the long side and crop a square around the logo first, so the mark fills the frame instead of floating in empty space.

To lose the white box, cut the logo out onto transparency and convert that PNG instead. For a website, a favicon.ico alone no longer covers phones and home screens; generate the full set with touch icons and a manifest when you need those too.

Check the icon at small sizes

  • Look at the 16-pixel version: thin text and fine detail disappear first.
  • Make sure the subject is centered and fills most of the square.
  • Test it against both light and dark browser themes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to ICO?
Upload your JPG file above. It is converted to ICO automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting JPG to ICO lose quality?
Each icon size is scaled down from your image and stored without further compression, so small sizes stay crisp.
JPG or ICO: which should I use?
Use JPG for photos you share, email, print or upload. Use ICO for website favicons and Windows app or shortcut icons. Keep in mind the main drawback of ICO: icons are square and at most 256 × 256 pixels.
What is a JPG file?
JPG is the standard format for photos. It shrinks files by discarding detail the eye barely notices, which suits photographs but blurs text and sharp edges.
What sizes does the ICO file include?
The standard icon sizes of 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, skipping any larger than your image. Browsers and Windows pick the best size automatically.
Is the JPG to ICO converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
