Why convert ORF to PNG?
- PNG is supported far more widely than ORF, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
- PNG is made for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.
- No Photoshop or Lightroom needed: the file is opened on our servers and you download a ready-to-use PNG.
What to expect when converting ORF to PNG
- The RAW file is developed at full resolution with your camera’s white balance. Keep the original ORF to re-edit exposure later.
- Your original ORF file isn’t changed: you download a new PNG copy.

ORF to PNG for close-up records and repeated edits
Tough TG compacts and Olympus macro setups are often used for close-up documentation: insects, coins, circuit boards, plant samples. For that kind of record PNG beats JPG as the output, because measurements, labels and side-by-side comparisons work on exact pixels, and a PNG can be opened, marked up and saved again without adding compression each time.
The converted PNG uses 8 bits per channel, is developed with the white balance stored in the ORF and with automatic brightness, and can show the full 4:3 frame even if the camera was set to a different aspect ratio. Any Picture Mode or Art Filter you used isn't applied. PNG has no quality slider, and a lossless full-resolution frame is large, so allow for storage if you convert a whole session.
To assemble a report, combine the PNGs into a single PDF; to fit a 3:2 or square slot, crop each picture to that shape first. If the pictures are only going to be emailed or posted, the ORF to JPG page gives much smaller files.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert ORF to PNG?
- Upload your ORF file above. It is converted to PNG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting ORF to PNG lose quality?
- No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is kept exactly.
- ORF or PNG: which should I use?
- Use ORF for adjusting exposure and white balance with maximum latitude. Use PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs. Keep in mind the main drawback of PNG: large files for photographs.
- What is a ORF file?
- ORF is the RAW format of Olympus and OM System cameras. It stores the unprocessed sensor data for maximum editing latitude, so most apps can’t show it as a normal picture.
- Can I convert ORF to PNG without Photoshop or Lightroom?
- Yes. The ORF file is opened on our servers, so you don’t need Photoshop or Lightroom or any other software installed. Upload the file, then download the finished PNG.
- Is the ORF to PNG converter free?
