Why convert SVG to ICO?

  • Transparent areas stay transparent: ICO supports smooth, partial transparency just like SVG.
  • One ICO bundles the standard 16 to 256 px icon sizes (up to the size of your image), ready for a favicon.ico or a Windows shortcut.

What to expect when converting SVG to ICO

  • Icons are square, so a non-square image is centred on a transparent square. Sizes larger than your image aren’t created, so start from at least 256 × 256 pixels.
  • The SVG is drawn at a fixed pixel size, so the ICO won’t stay sharp if you enlarge it later. Keep the original for editing.

Building a favicon.ico from an SVG logo

Many current browsers accept an SVG favicon, yet favicon.ico is still the file plenty of sites keep for older browsers, bookmark bars and tools that ask for it by name, and Windows shortcuts need ICO. Converting an SVG logo produces one .ico containing all six standard sizes, 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, because small SVGs are first drawn at 1024 pixels, large enough to fill every size.

Transparency is kept, and a non-square logo is centered on a transparent square, which can leave a wide wordmark unreadably small. Use a square symbol or monogram version of the logo and simplify it: hairline strokes and small text vanish at 16 × 16. After uploading the icon to your site, look at the browser tab at normal zoom; that is the small version most visitors see.

For the full set a modern website uses, including PNG icons for phones and home screens plus a web manifest, generate a complete favicon pack from the same artwork.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert SVG to ICO?
Upload your SVG file above. It is converted to ICO automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting SVG to ICO lose quality?
Each icon size is scaled down from your image and stored without further compression, so small sizes stay crisp.
Will the ICO keep the transparent background?
Yes. ICO supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
SVG or ICO: which should I use?
Use SVG for logos, icons and illustrations that must stay sharp at any size. Use ICO for website favicons and Windows app or shortcut icons. Keep in mind the main drawback of ICO: icons are square and at most 256 × 256 pixels.
What is a SVG file?
SVG describes a picture as shapes and paths instead of pixels, so it stays crisp at any size. Social networks, email apps and many upload forms don’t accept SVG, which is why people convert it.
What sizes does the ICO file include?
The standard icon sizes of 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, skipping any larger than your image. Browsers and Windows pick the best size automatically.
Is the SVG to ICO converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
