Why convert SVG to GIF?
- GIF is supported far more widely than SVG, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
- GIF is made for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics.
What to expect when converting SVG to GIF
- GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, so soft edges and shadows become hard-edged.
- GIF shows at most 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients are dithered and may show banding.
- The SVG is drawn at a fixed pixel size, so the GIF won’t stay sharp if you enlarge it later. Keep the original for editing.
SVG vs GIF
| Feature | SVG | GIF |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Scalable Vector Graphics | Graphics Interchange Format |
| Origin | A W3C standard since 2001 | Introduced by CompuServe in 1987 |
| Compression | Vector shapes (text-based) | Lossless, but limited to 256 colours |
| Transparency | Yes — smooth, partial transparency | On/off only (one transparent colour) |
| Animation | Yes | Yes |
| Colour | Any colour — shapes are drawn, not stored as pixels | Up to 256 colours per frame |
| Where it opens | Browsers and design tools; many apps and upload forms reject it | All browsers, email apps and messaging apps |
| Best for | logos, icons and illustrations that must stay sharp at any size | short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics |
| Main drawback | it can’t hold photos efficiently and many apps don’t accept it | only 256 colours and on/off transparency |
In short: choose SVG for logos, icons and illustrations that must stay sharp at any size; choose GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics.
Making a still GIF from an SVG graphic
GIF is the fallback for places that accept little else, such as older email clients, legacy forums and some intranet editors. Converting an SVG icon or badge to GIF gets it into those spaces, but expect a simpler result than the vector original.
The GIF is a single still frame. If your SVG moves with CSS or built-in animation, that motion is not played out into frames; you get one rendered image. To create a moving GIF, export the frames you want as images and assemble them in the GIF maker. Small artwork is drawn with its long side at 1024 pixels, which is large for an email, so scale the GIF down when it needs to be smaller.
Every frame of a GIF uses a palette of 256 colors, and the converter dithers to fit it, which is fine for flat logos but adds a speckled texture to gradients. Transparency is all or nothing for each pixel, so the smooth edge of a circle or a curved letter turns slightly jagged against a transparent background. For smooth edges with transparency, a PNG is the better choice.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert SVG to GIF?
- Upload your SVG file above. It is converted to GIF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting SVG to GIF lose quality?
- GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, so photos lose colour detail; graphics with few colours convert cleanly.
- Will the GIF keep the transparent background?
- Partly. GIF keeps transparency as on or off per pixel, so soft edges and shadows become hard-edged.
- SVG or GIF: which should I use?
- Use SVG for logos, icons and illustrations that must stay sharp at any size. Use GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics. Keep in mind the main drawback of GIF: only 256 colours and on/off transparency.
- What is a SVG file?
- SVG describes a picture as shapes and paths instead of pixels, so it stays crisp at any size. Social networks, email apps and many upload forms don’t accept SVG, which is why people convert it.
- Is the SVG to GIF converter free?
- Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

- For JPG, WebP, AVIF and image-to-PDF output: higher keeps more detail but makes a bigger file; 60–80 suits most photos. Documents (Publisher, XPS, EPS…) become PDFs with every page and sharp text, with no quality setting.

- For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.

- For JPG, BMP and image-to-PDF output, which can’t store transparency: the colour that fills transparent areas (white by default).
