Why convert TIFF to ICO?
- Transparent areas stay transparent: ICO supports smooth, partial transparency just like TIFF.
- One ICO bundles the standard 16 to 256 px icon sizes (up to the size of your image), ready for a favicon.ico or a Windows shortcut.
What to expect when converting TIFF to ICO
- Icons are square, so a non-square image is centred on a transparent square. Sizes larger than your image aren’t created, so start from at least 256 × 256 pixels.
- Only the first page of a multi-page TIFF is converted, and CMYK print colour becomes standard RGB.

Making an icon from a TIFF logo or artwork file
Designers and print vendors often hand over logos as TIFF, which is fine for print but no use as a site or app icon. Converting builds a multi-size .ico from that artwork, with all six standard sizes from 16 to 256 pixels whenever the TIFF is at least 256 pixels across, as print files nearly always are.
Transparency in the TIFF is kept at every size, which is what lets an icon sit on any tab or desktop color. A logo saved on a solid white background shows that white square instead, so if you need clear corners, cut the logo out and build the icon from that PNG on the PNG to ICO page. Wide logos are centered on a square and shrink to fit, so a compact mark or monogram reads better at 16 pixels than a full wordmark.
A TIFF with several pages contributes just its first, and CMYK artwork is converted to screen RGB. For the larger PNG icons that phones and web app manifests use, create a complete favicon pack.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert TIFF to ICO?
- Upload your TIFF file above. It is converted to ICO automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting TIFF to ICO lose quality?
- Each icon size is scaled down from your image and stored without further compression, so small sizes stay crisp.
- Will the ICO keep the transparent background?
- Yes. ICO supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
- TIFF or ICO: which should I use?
- Use TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving. Use ICO for website favicons and Windows app or shortcut icons. Keep in mind the main drawback of ICO: icons are square and at most 256 × 256 pixels.

- What sizes does the ICO file include?
- The standard icon sizes of 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, skipping any larger than your image. Browsers and Windows pick the best size automatically.
