Why convert TIFF to PNG?

  • PNG files are usually smaller than TIFF for the same picture, so pages load faster and uploads finish sooner.
  • PNG is supported far more widely than TIFF, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
  • Transparent areas stay transparent: PNG supports smooth, partial transparency just like TIFF.
  • PNG is made for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.

What to expect when converting TIFF to PNG

  • Only the first page of a multi-page TIFF is converted, and CMYK print colour becomes standard RGB.
  • Your original TIFF file isn’t changed: you download a new PNG copy.

TIFF to PNG: a lossless copy that browsers and apps can show

Scans, studio product shots and print-ready artwork often live as TIFF, which browsers won't display and many apps open slowly. PNG is just as lossless and opens in every browser, phone and editor, so it is the copy to use on a website, in a shared-drive preview or on a form that refuses TIFF.

Transparency in the TIFF stays transparent in the PNG; switch the Transparency preview between Grid and Website to check edges against a checkerboard and against a page. CMYK print colors become standard RGB, so a press-ready file can look slightly different on screen. A multi-page TIFF contributes only its first page.

Big scans meet upload limits before anything else: files up to 20 MB upload on the free plan, 50 MB on Premium and 120 MB on Pro. An uncompressed color scan of a letter page at 600 dpi is about 100 MB, so scan at 300 dpi when the PNG is only for screens. For a much smaller file to email, save the TIFF as a JPG.
