Why convert TIFF to GIF?

  • GIF files are usually smaller than TIFF for the same picture, so pages load faster and uploads finish sooner.
  • GIF is supported far more widely than TIFF, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
  • GIF is made for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics.

What to expect when converting TIFF to GIF

  • GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, so soft edges and shadows become hard-edged.
  • GIF shows at most 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients are dithered and may show banding.
  • Only the first page of a multi-page TIFF is converted, and CMYK print colour becomes standard RGB.

TIFF to GIF for simple graphics and older systems

GIF only makes sense for a TIFF that holds simple artwork: a scanned signature, a line drawing, a black-and-white diagram or a logo with a few flat colors. Those fit within GIF's 256-color palette with little change and become tiny files that older web pages, email templates and legacy systems accept.

Photographic TIFFs suffer. The converter reduces each picture to 256 colors with dithering, so gradients and skin turn grainy. A transparent TIFF keeps its see-through areas, but only as pixels that are either fully clear or fully solid, which leaves soft shadows and smoothed edges jagged; check them in the preview's Grid view.

A scanned drawing is often far bigger in pixels than a screen needs, so after converting, reduce the GIF's pixel size to keep it light. For a photographic TIFF that has to go out by email, save it as a JPG sized for email instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert TIFF to GIF?
Upload your TIFF file above. It is converted to GIF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting TIFF to GIF lose quality?
GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, so photos lose colour detail; graphics with few colours convert cleanly.
Will the GIF keep the transparent background?
Partly. GIF keeps transparency as on or off per pixel, so soft edges and shadows become hard-edged.
TIFF or GIF: which should I use?
Use TIFF for print production, scanning and long-term archiving. Use GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics. Keep in mind the main drawback of GIF: only 256 colours and on/off transparency.
What is a TIFF file?
TIFF is the workhorse of print and archiving. It keeps every pixel without loss and is accepted by print shops, publishers and document-management systems.
Is the TIFF to GIF converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

For JPG, WebP, AVIF and image-to-PDF output: higher keeps more detail but makes a bigger file; 60–80 suits most photos. Documents (Publisher, XPS, EPS…) become PDFs with every page and sharp text, with no quality setting.

For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.

For JPG, BMP and image-to-PDF output, which can’t store transparency: the colour that fills transparent areas (white by default).
