Why convert TIFF to AVIF?

  • AVIF files are usually smaller than TIFF for the same picture, so pages load faster and uploads finish sooner.
  • Transparent areas stay transparent: AVIF supports smooth, partial transparency just like TIFF.
  • AVIF is made for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps.

What to expect when converting TIFF to AVIF

  • AVIF uses lossy compression by default; raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.
  • Only the first page of a multi-page TIFF is converted, and CMYK print colour becomes standard RGB.

TIFF to AVIF: the lightest web copy of a high-resolution master

AVIF is worth it when a large TIFF, such as a gallery scan or a product master, must load quickly on a website while still looking sharp. Of the outputs offered here it typically gives the lightest file for a given look, and all of today's major browsers display it, Safari from version 16 onward.

A 16-bit TIFF is brought down to standard 8-bit color on the way, so treat the AVIF as a delivery copy and keep the TIFF as the master. When the file has several pages, the first one is the page converted. Lossless mode is there, but for photographic scans the quality slider gives most of the benefit; try 70 to 80 and watch how the file size shown on the preview changes.

The AVIF keeps every pixel of the master, often far more than a page displays, and the resizer can't save AVIF; when you need a smaller version, resize the TIFF straight to WebP or JPG. Where AVIF isn't accepted, a WebP version works in nearly every browser and in more apps.
