Why convert WebP to GIF?

  • GIF is supported far more widely than WebP, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
  • Animation is kept: every frame and its timing carries over to the GIF.
  • GIF is made for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics.

What to expect when converting WebP to GIF

  • GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, so soft edges and shadows become hard-edged.
  • GIF shows at most 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients are dithered and may show banding.

Animated or still WebP to GIF for chats, email and old platforms

Animated WebP stickers and short loops saved from websites play in browsers, but plenty of places still expect GIF: email newsletters, forums, older messaging apps and some content tools. When the WebP is animated, this converter keeps every frame and its timing, so the loop plays the same way as a GIF. A still WebP becomes a still GIF.

The color limit is where the result changes. Each GIF frame holds at most 256 colors, so a WebP with gradients or photographic content is dithered into a fine dotted texture. Semi-transparent edges also become fully clear or fully solid, which can leave a ragged outline on stickers with soft shadows. Flat cartoons and text animations come through best.

GIF files are often much bigger than the WebP they came from, which matters for email size limits and chat uploads. Reduce colors and optimize frames on the finished GIF, or scale it down while keeping every frame.

Check the converted GIF

  • Play the loop and confirm the speed matches the original.
  • Look for ragged edges where the WebP had soft shadows.
  • Note the file size against the limit of the app you will post to.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert WebP to GIF?
Upload your WebP file above. It is converted to GIF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting WebP to GIF lose quality?
GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, so photos lose colour detail; graphics with few colours convert cleanly.
Will the GIF keep the transparent background?
Partly. GIF keeps transparency as on or off per pixel, so soft edges and shadows become hard-edged.
Will the animation be kept?
Yes. Every frame and its timing carries over to the GIF.
WebP or GIF: which should I use?
Use WebP for websites, online stores and blogs that need fast-loading images. Use GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics. Keep in mind the main drawback of GIF: only 256 colours and on/off transparency.
What is a WebP file?
WebP was designed by Google for the web. Google measured lossy WebP files at 25–34% smaller than comparable JPGs, and WebP also handles transparency and animation.
Is the WebP to GIF converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

For JPG, WebP, AVIF and image-to-PDF output: higher keeps more detail but makes a bigger file; 60–80 suits most photos. Documents (Publisher, XPS, EPS…) become PDFs with every page and sharp text, with no quality setting.

For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.

For JPG, BMP and image-to-PDF output, which can’t store transparency: the colour that fills transparent areas (white by default).
