Why convert WebP to AVIF?

  • AVIF files are usually smaller than WebP for the same picture, so pages load faster and uploads finish sooner.
  • Transparent areas stay transparent: AVIF supports smooth, partial transparency just like WebP.
  • AVIF is made for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps.

What to expect when converting WebP to AVIF

  • AVIF can’t hold this animation, so an animated WebP is saved as its first frame.
  • AVIF uses lossy compression by default; raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.

Re-encoding WebP images as AVIF: when the savings are worth it

WebP and AVIF are both modern web formats, so this conversion is about squeezing out more bytes, for example on a site whose image budget is already tight. Most WebP files are lossy, which means converting re-compresses a picture that has been compressed once already. Each lossy pass discards a little more, so use the best source you have; if the original JPG or PNG is available, convert that instead.

Begin with the quality slider between 70 and 80 and compare the KB figure on the preview with the WebP's size. If the saving is small, keep the WebP; a marginal reduction rarely justifies visible softening. For a lossless WebP logo or graphic, switch on Lossless mode so the AVIF keeps every pixel. Transparency comes across in either mode.

Animated WebP stickers and banners don't survive this route: the AVIF written here is a still image of the first frame. For moving images, keep the WebP or turn the animation into a GIF. Visitors on older browsers may not see AVIF at all, so keep a JPG fallback if your site can't serve both.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert WebP to AVIF?
Upload your WebP file above. It is converted to AVIF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting WebP to AVIF lose quality?
AVIF is lossy by default, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. Raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.
Will the AVIF keep the transparent background?
Yes. AVIF supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
Will the animation be kept?
No. AVIF can’t hold animation, so an animated WebP is saved as its first frame.
WebP or AVIF: which should I use?
Use WebP for websites, online stores and blogs that need fast-loading images. Use AVIF for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps. Keep in mind the main drawback of AVIF: it is slow to create and many editing apps and older devices can’t open it.
What is a WebP file?
WebP was designed by Google for the web. Google measured lossy WebP files at 25–34% smaller than comparable JPGs, and WebP also handles transparency and animation.
Is the WebP to AVIF converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
