X3F to PNG to keep Foveon detail free of compression

Foveon photographers are often drawn to Sigma cameras for fine texture at base ISO, and JPG compression is what blurs that texture first. A PNG of the developed X3F keeps every pixel as decoded, which makes it the better file for close inspection, large prints prepared in another program, or crops that need to hold up.

To see whether PNG is worth the extra space for a given shot, convert it both ways and compare the two with a reveal slider; on smooth skies the difference is hard to spot, while foliage, hair and fabric show it sooner.

The PNG has 8 bits per channel, takes its white balance from the X3F, uses automatic brightness and is opaque. Color settings chosen on the camera aren't applied.
