How it works

Topographic Depth Lines estimates relative distance from the camera, normalises it robustly, and divides that fixed depth field into 18 regular bands. A 3 × 3 median filter removes isolated one-pixel labels before each exact threshold is subpixel-interpolated across its two neighbouring source coordinates. A narrow antialiased cream isoline is then composited over a source-luminance teal map. Intensity changes the real map and line opacity while every contour stays tied to those original coordinates. At its working size, the renderer never shifts, spatially resamples, inpaints, or regenerates RGB or alpha, so people, faces, arms, objects, framing, and transparency remain aligned and working-frame alpha stays byte-exact. Larger uploads can be proportionally resized before depth analysis: the standard free limit is 800 pixels on the long side, and the depth service defaults to a 2048-pixel long side for remaining larger inputs. The result is returned as a lossless PNG.

Best for

data-styled artwork, technical and architectural presentations, interiors, landscapes, album covers, and abstract portraits with clear near-to-far separation.

Less suited to: flat scenes, glass, mirrors, reflections, smoke, fine hair or foliage, and images where monocular relative depth is uncertain; contours intentionally cross faces, clothing, and objects when their estimated depth reaches a threshold.

Ways to use Topographic Depth Lines

    Topographic Depth Lines questions

What do the contour lines represent?
They represent model-estimated relative distance, not surveyed or metric depth. Tightly spaced contours mean the estimated depth changes quickly, such as along a profile or object edge; wide spacing means it changes gradually. The 17 internal thresholds are regular across the normalised 18-band range.
Can I still recognise the subject?
Yes. Within the prepared frame, the map retains source luminance and does not reshape geometry, so silhouette, facial structure, clothing, and scene layout remain aligned. Contours can legitimately pass across a forehead, nose, arm, or shirt because those pixels reach a depth threshold; they are graphic overlays, not deformed anatomy. Lower intensity preserves more original color and detail.
