A 10 KB limit leaves room for very few pixels. If an application form asks for a scanned signature or a small photo under 10 KB, prepare the image before compressing: crop tightly around the signature so no blank paper is wasted, then resize it to a few hundred pixels wide, which is ample for a signature box on a form.

Check that strokes or facial features are still recognizable; heavy, blocky artifacts mean the image needs fewer pixels rather than lower quality.
