Why convert GIF to AVIF?
- AVIF files are usually smaller than GIF for the same picture, so pages load faster and uploads finish sooner.
- AVIF is made for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps.
What to expect when converting GIF to AVIF
- AVIF can’t hold this animation, so an animated GIF is saved as its first frame.
- AVIF uses lossy compression by default; raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.

Converting a GIF to AVIF: a still image, not an animation
AVIF output here is for still images. When a GIF has several frames, the converter keeps the first and drops the rest, so the AVIF won't move. That works for a small, sharp still on a modern website, such as a preview frame next to a play button, but not for a loop; convert to WebP to keep every frame.
A GIF frame has at most 256 colors, so AVIF's wider color range has nothing extra to hold; the gain is a smaller file. Switch on Lossless mode for logos, pixel art and frames with text so the edges stay exact, or use the quality slider for frames taken from video. Transparent GIF pixels stay transparent in the AVIF.
Up-to-date desktop and mobile browsers display AVIF, Safari from version 16, yet plenty of image editors and older phones still refuse the format. For a still frame you intend to keep editing, save it as a PNG instead.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert GIF to AVIF?
- Upload your GIF file above. It is converted to AVIF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting GIF to AVIF lose quality?
- AVIF is lossy by default, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. Raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.
- Will the AVIF keep the transparent background?
- Yes. AVIF supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
- Will the animation be kept?
- No. AVIF can’t hold animation, so an animated GIF is saved as its first frame.
- GIF or AVIF: which should I use?
- Use GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics. Use AVIF for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps. Keep in mind the main drawback of AVIF: it is slow to create and many editing apps and older devices can’t open it.
- What is a GIF file?
- GIF is the original web animation format. Each frame can use only 256 colours, so it suits simple graphics and short loops rather than photos.
