Why convert JPG to GIF?

  • GIF is made for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics.
  • GIF is accepted by GIF libraries, sticker makers and older web tools that ask for a .gif file.

What to expect when converting JPG to GIF

  • GIF shows at most 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients are dithered and may show banding.
  • Your original JPG file isn’t changed: you download a new GIF copy.

Turning a JPG photo into a GIF without surprises

People usually need this when a system insists on a .gif: an older forum avatar field, a legacy content tool, or a still frame that will sit beside other GIF images. A GIF holds at most 256 colors, while a JPG can show 16.7 million. The converter picks the 256 that best fit your photo and scatters dots of neighboring shades to imitate the rest, a technique called dithering, so skies, skin and soft shadows look grainy up close.

Expect the GIF to come out larger than the JPG, not smaller. GIF compression handles flat areas of color well and photographic texture badly. Reducing the dimensions helps more than anything else, so cut the photo down to the pixel size the site shows before converting. There is no quality slider for GIF; the palette is the only lever, and it is chosen for you.

If what you really want is movement, one converted JPG only gives you a still GIF. To string several photos into a loop with your own timing, build the animation from ordered frames, then trim the finished file's weight if a chat app refuses it.

Check the GIF before you upload it

  • Zoom into skies and faces for banding or heavy grain.
  • Compare the GIF file size with the JPG you started from.
  • Confirm the site really requires GIF; for photos, JPG keeps far more color.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to GIF?
Upload your JPG file above. It is converted to GIF automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting JPG to GIF lose quality?
GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, so photos lose colour detail; graphics with few colours convert cleanly.
JPG or GIF: which should I use?
Use JPG for photos you share, email, print or upload. Use GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics. Keep in mind the main drawback of GIF: only 256 colours and on/off transparency.
What is a JPG file?
JPG is the standard format for photos. It shrinks files by discarding detail the eye barely notices, which suits photographs but blurs text and sharp edges.
Is the JPG to GIF converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

For JPG, WebP, AVIF and image-to-PDF output: higher keeps more detail but makes a bigger file; 60–80 suits most photos. Documents (Publisher, XPS, EPS…) become PDFs with every page and sharp text, with no quality setting.

For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.

For JPG, BMP and image-to-PDF output, which can’t store transparency: the colour that fills transparent areas (white by default).
