  • PNG is made for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.
  • No Photoshop or Lightroom needed: the file is opened on our servers and you download a ready-to-use PNG.

What to expect when converting DNG to PNG

DNG to PNG: a lossless copy of a phone, drone or Leica RAW for editing

A PNG makes sense when the DNG is a starting point rather than the finished photo: a drone shot that will be placed into a map or a presentation, a phone RAW going into a design app that cannot read DNG, or a Leica or Pentax frame you want to retouch without adding JPG compression. The PNG holds exactly the developed picture, so every later save in your editor stays lossless.

Two trade-offs come with it. PNG keeps 8 bits per color channel here, while the DNG may carry 12 to 16, so big exposure rescues are still better done from the DNG in a RAW editor. And PNGs of large photos are heavy: a 48-megapixel phone RAW or a 20-megapixel drone frame becomes a PNG much bigger than a JPG, sometimes bigger than the DNG itself. If the picture only needs to be viewed or shared, DNG to JPG is the lighter route.

After converting, trim the frame to the part you need, or cut the subject out of its background for a design. When the finished PNG has to load quickly on a website, convert it to WebP for a much smaller file.

What to check in the PNG

  • Fine detail in skies and shadows holds up when you zoom in to actual pixels
  • The file size suits the editor or upload form you plan to use
  • You kept the DNG for any heavy exposure work later

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert DNG to PNG?
Upload your DNG file above. It is converted to PNG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.

DNG or PNG: which should I use?
Use DNG for adjusting exposure and white balance with maximum latitude. Use PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs. Keep in mind the main drawback of PNG: large files for photographs.
What is a DNG file?
DNG is Adobe’s open RAW format (Digital Negative), used by phones such as iPhone ProRAW and Google Pixel, by drones, and by Leica and Pentax cameras. It stores the unprocessed sensor data for maximum editing latitude, so most apps can’t show it as a normal picture.
Can I convert DNG to PNG without Photoshop or Lightroom?
Yes. The DNG file is opened on our servers, so you don’t need Photoshop or Lightroom or any other software installed. Upload the file, then download the finished PNG.
Is the DNG to PNG converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
