Why convert GIF to PDF?
- The PDF page is sized to your image, so it prints and previews without cropping or extra borders.
- Anyone can open the PDF in the viewer built into their browser, phone or computer.
What to expect when converting GIF to PDF
- PDF can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
- PDF can’t hold this animation, so an animated GIF is saved as its first frame.
- You get one page per image, with the picture embedded as a high-quality JPEG. To combine several images into one PDF, use the Image to PDF tool.
GIF vs PDF
| Feature | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Graphics Interchange Format | Portable Document Format |
| Origin | Introduced by CompuServe in 1987 | Created by Adobe in 1993; an ISO standard since 2008 |
| Compression | Lossless, but limited to 256 colours | Document page with the image embedded at high quality |
| Transparency | On/off only (one transparent colour) | No — transparent areas get a solid background |
| Animation | Yes | No |
| Colour | Up to 256 colours per frame | Full colour |
| Where it opens | All browsers, email apps and messaging apps | Built-in viewers in browsers, phones and computers |
| Best for | short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics | emailing, printing and attaching images to forms and applications |
| Main drawback | only 256 colours and on/off transparency | the picture isn’t editable as an image until you convert it back |
In short: choose GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics; choose PDF for emailing, printing and attaching images to forms and applications.
Placing a GIF frame on a PDF page to print or attach
A PDF wraps the GIF's first frame in a document that prints and attaches like any other page. It helps when a chart or diagram saved as GIF must go into a report, or be submitted somewhere that only accepts PDFs. The animation can't live in this PDF; it shows one still frame.
Any see-through part of the GIF is backed with the Background fill color, which you can change from its starting white. The frame is embedded as a JPEG, so keep the quality slider high for diagrams with fine text. Page size comes from the image, each pixel counting as one point, a 72nd of an inch, so a 480-pixel-wide GIF makes a page about 6.7 inches wide.
Need the graphic on a standard sheet with margins, or several frames in one document? Lay the images out on A4 or Letter pages. Already holding several single-page PDFs? Merge them into one file.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert GIF to PDF?

- Does converting GIF to PDF lose quality?

- Will the PDF keep the transparent background?
- No. PDF can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
- Will the animation be kept?

- GIF or PDF: which should I use?

- Is the GIF to PDF converter free?
