Why convert GIF to BMP?

  • BMP is lossless, so the converted image loses no further detail when you edit and save it again.
  • BMP is made for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.

What to expect when converting GIF to BMP

  • BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
  • BMP can’t hold this animation, so an animated GIF is saved as its first frame.
  • Converting can’t bring back detail that GIF compression already removed: the BMP is an exact copy of the image as it is, usually in a bigger file.

GIF to BMP for legacy programs that read plain bitmaps

BMP is what older Windows programs, embedded screens and other simple tools ask for when they can't decode compressed formats. The converter writes the GIF's first frame as an uncompressed 24-bit BMP that such software reads.

The 24-bit BMP that most programs read has no transparency, so see-through GIF pixels get whatever color is set under Background fill, white to start with. If the device draws on black, set the fill to black so the graphic doesn't sit in a white box. An animation becomes a single still, since only the first frame is kept.

Expect the file to grow. A GIF packs its colors into a palette, while BMP spends three bytes on every pixel: a 640 × 480 frame becomes roughly 0.9 MB. If the target screen has a fixed size, crop the GIF to the area you need before converting, and if the program also accepts PNG, a PNG still stays lossless in a much smaller file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert GIF to BMP?
Upload your GIF file above. It is converted to BMP automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting GIF to BMP lose quality?
No new loss is added: BMP stores the picture exactly as it is. Detail that GIF compression removed earlier can’t be restored.
Will the BMP keep the transparent background?
No. BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
Will the animation be kept?
No. BMP can’t hold animation, so an animated GIF is saved as its first frame.
GIF or BMP: which should I use?
Use GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics. Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Keep in mind the main drawback of BMP: very large files and no transparency.
What is a GIF file?
GIF is the original web animation format. Each frame can use only 256 colours, so it suits simple graphics and short loops rather than photos.
Is the GIF to BMP converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
