Why convert PNG to BMP?

  • BMP is made for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.
  • BMP needs no decoding, so very simple or older software can display it.

What to expect when converting PNG to BMP

  • BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
  • Expect a bigger file: BMP usually takes more space than PNG for the same picture.

In short: choose PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs; choose BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.

PNG to BMP: choosing what fills the transparent parts

Older Windows tools and simple embedded screens read BMP but not PNG. The converter writes a 24-bit BMP, which has no alpha channel, so any transparent or semi-transparent pixel in your PNG is blended onto a solid color. That color is white unless you change Background fill in the Settings tab.

Pick the fill to match where the image will appear. An icon for a dark device screen wants black or the screen's own background; a logo for a white document wants white. Soft edges are mixed with the fill, so a logo prepared on white and later shown on dark gray carries a pale outline. Converting twice with different fills costs little, so compare both.

Size grows sharply: BMP stores every pixel uncompressed, so a 1280 × 720 screenshot becomes close to 3 MB however small the PNG was. When the target device has a fixed resolution, resize the PNG to match before converting. If the transparency has to survive, BMP is the wrong destination; TIFF keeps it losslessly.

Before you convert

  • Set Background fill to the color the BMP will be shown on.
  • Look at the logo edges after converting for a light or dark halo.
  • Confirm the pixel size the old program or device expects.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to BMP?
Upload your PNG file above. It is converted to BMP automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting PNG to BMP lose quality?
No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is kept exactly.
Will the BMP keep the transparent background?
No. BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
PNG or BMP: which should I use?
Use PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs. Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Keep in mind the main drawback of BMP: very large files and no transparency.
What is a PNG file?
PNG stores every pixel exactly and supports smooth transparency, which makes it the go-to format for screenshots, logos and graphics, at the cost of large files for photos.
Is the PNG to BMP converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
